Transitions, Change and Making Messes
Transitions are messy. Change is messier Living in the center of dynamic, systemic change is messiest of all. When I came to Society Headquarters May 1 for an interim position, I understood that there would be hiccups and controversies, the need for rapid decision-making and daily re-assessing of priorities. What I wasn't prepared for was the enthusiasm and readiness of staff to take on any challenge. What few of our members truly understand is the dedication, loyalty and care that their 20 onsite employees exhibit each day. I say onsite because we have two consultant professionals offsite who perform with the same level of expertise and energy. I have asked DKG employees to blur department lines to come together to solve problems and raise issues. Because I know they think about their work, I have asked them to share their reflections with each other and raise new areas of concern. I have been overwhelmed with their level of reflection and willingness to take risks and share. I have asked them to live in a world of messy change. It certainly is not always comfortable. It isn't neat and tidy. It is the center of dynamic, systemic change and it is exciting!
